I thought it would be a good idea to have a list of websites people have found useful for researching their Scottish ancestors and for all things Scottish. I invite everyone to add their favourites. Here are some of mine:

Besides the great ones already listed by others, I was able to locate family grave stones using:

http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/databank/miindex/miindex.php : Index to MI Booklets published by ANESFHS

which once I found the plot # or kirkyard.... I sent a request to

http://www.raogk.org/scotland.htm : which then I was able to connect with a person willing to go out and take photos of the grave stones

I just learned of a couple of websites I was previously unaware of. One is an off-shoot of Scotland's People and is called Scotland'splaces. Great for old maps and gazetteers of old communities. On this website, you need to search by PLACE not by person. This is not a pay per view site, it is free.

For Douglas ancestors, it has to be the Douglas Archives. Note different sections for genealogy, history, biographies and more.
