Scotch-Irish

An American ethic group of those who think their ancestors were Scottish Protestants living in Ulster. Our challenges: researching in colonial times, crossing the Pond, researching in Ireland. You can do this, but need to learn how. It is not easy.

I am looking for any information on Martha Kerr. She married Alexander Craig and they settled in Washington Co., PA. I found some information that suggested that the Kerr and Craig families came to America on the same ship. They both came from County Down, Ireland. Martha was born 1772 and died 15 Jan 1852 in Buffalo, Washington County, PA. Alexander was born in 1759 and died 17 Aug 1811 Buffalo, Washington County, PA. I have a letter written by their grandson, John Henderson Craig, to his sister, Martha (Craig) Darby, wife of John Wesley Darby. He is the son of Hugh Craig and Hannah Henderson. It mentions relatives...Aunt Henderson, Wesley, Alexander, Squire McLain, Hugh, Uncle James, Seth, Uncle Thomas, Aunt Drusilla

Thanks, James.  It has been a long while since I have looked at these families.  I appreciate the links!

I have been trying to figure out where in Antrim County my Scot-Irish ancestor came from.  Alexander Cochran arrived in US around 1801ish.  He married Catharine Kirk in Hunterdon County, NJ in 1806, naturalized in the same county in 1808, and at some point decided to settle in Bucks County, PA.  His naturalization record only states that he came from Antrim County.  Does anyone possibly know what parish he may have lived in?

For those not aware of them, here are a couple of excellent sites for Ulster research: The Irish Family History Foundation/Roots Ireland at http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/?gclid=CLDRsofq9bUCFY6e4Aodfz0Ajg and The Ulster Historical Foundation at  http://www.ancestryireland.com/

I am interested in surname Eakin, out of Derry.  "I am told" that mine were from Banagher Parrish, Claudy, but I have not proofed this yet.  Were in western PA by the late 1840s.  Children then b PA, and prior, Ireland.

Also another family line, Carrick, that headed southward earlier than this, to NC.  Only managed to get that line back to 1760 in VA.  Not all the way to the coast yet....

My ancestry came from londonderry county. My Thomas Wilson came to America about 1844 he was married to Jane Cherry and they both ended up in Wisconsin. I would love to find more information about him while in Ireland. I think he was born about 1818

Hello

I am trying to find out where Francis Hilley came from, we know he came to VA in 1700's from Larne Ireland but also shows Donagel.  There are some thoughts that he was actually a Scot.   Anyone run across Hilley's.   Spelling might be different.

To Chris Torrence - my Plunkett line in the U.S. is said to have originated in Canada (obviously after Ireland).  They are likely to have arrived in Canada in the late 18th century and the first American-born one was Michael Plunkett, born in 1811 in New York.  I'm not sure if he was actually born in NY - more likely Canada.  I'd love to know more information about my line if you can shed any light.  I have hit a brick wall trying to back further.  Thanks, Gaye

Hello Chris

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm researching a number of names all from County Antrim (for the Scots-Irish part).

From the Ballymena area (valley of the braid and Ballymena Poor Law Union), I'm researching Taylors, Kerrs, Kernohan and Crawford, which are my husband's mother's families (who emigrated to Middlesex county and later to Haliburton county). I am also looking for Gambles and McKelveys for friends of mine. These families all settled in Ontario.

My own family (maternal side) are the Ogilvies, (later a side branch of Ogilbys) Agnews, Nelsons, and Beggs all from the Larne/Kilwaughter area. All were Presbyterians. The Ogilvie/Ogilby families I have followed back in the parish and estate records to 1699 along with the Agnews. My branch of Ogilbys emigrated in 1842 to Gloucester twp. in the Ottawa area (Ontario).
