In 2000, I discovered and visited the village in Alsace, France from where my paternal grandmother's family emigrated to Chicago in 1874. My grandmother only knew that the family came from Alsace but no one knew the precise village. In 2002, I returned to Alsace to look for the original house where my family lived and this time French national television filmed my visit for the country's top-rated magazine-style program called "Envoye Special." The program, entitled "La Généalogie," was seen by 4 million people and I have visited the village many times since then. This video clip, part of a longer piece of reporting, shows me looking for the precise roots of the Kling family in the village of Houssen, just outside Colmar. It is mostly in French but you will hear me speaking English, even though I speak French, because the program's policy is to have everyone speak in their native tongue.

Cool! Almost half of my husband's ancestors came from the Alsace area when it was part of Hungary. Only 20 years later, but what a difference!
I enjoyed your post!
