Terri,

Have you looked for your guy on Footnote.com (now Fold3.com)? They have within the last couple of weeks opened up their collection of Revolutionary War information...pensions, land grants, etc. It might be worth your while.

Hello

My mother and I are interested in applying to join DAR under or ancestor William Gauge Bloodgood Pvt NJ Milita.  Do you suggest that we do this together or her first followed by me.  We live in different sides of the state of Colorado.  If I understand correctly we need proof by means of birth, marriage, Death and census, and will's.  Thank you connie

Terri, the DAR service source for Joshua Odell is Roberts, NY in the Revolution, p25.  You can actually download that book from Google Books, and it is a good one to have on your computer if you do a lot of research in NY.  The edition that I downloaded had your ancestor on p9 in the 1st Regiment of the NY Continental Line, the same service listed by DAR.  HOWEVER, he is listed as Joshua Odle.  Taking the spelling of Odle to Fold3, you will have no trouble in finding his service record.  I did not locate a pension record.

I have a question, I have a direct ancestor that is in the DAR database and has a patriot number. His name is Joshua Odell. He is listed  from another line in my family, not me. I have info on the regiment he was in etc, but I am not able to find any of his War records. not even pension records. I am in the process of gathering all my info to become a DAR member and would also love to have copies of his war records, any idea why I can't find them? I have checked a few databases including footnote and ancestry, Thanks

Hello

The patriot ( there are several) are all on my fathers side.  I have access to my adoption records but the one's I have gotten thus far only list his age and family history.  The birthcert lists as un-named.  I was born in 1960 so rarely is there a mans name on the birth Cert.  I am going to keep requesting info from several other agencies that were involved in my adoption to get info and hopefully one will list his name.   My birthmother is more than willing to do a letter for me. so that is not a problem.   Hope that this was helpful.

Thank you Betty, I will print out a copy and send it in with the rest of my documents.  Very excited about joining the Thomas Shelton Chapter in Gonzales, Texas.  My great grandmother was a member of DAR in the Jane Douglas Chapter of Dallas. Therefore, my documentation has been fairly simple and should be ready to mail into the chapter Registrar this week.  Looking forward to the Luncheon next month.

Cecile, find your grandfather on the 1900 census.  That census asks for month and year you were born.  It can be used for the birth information on a DAR application.

I helped one prospective member by doing a proof argument regarding an ancestor.  I will have to do a similar argument on one of my supplements.  Sometimes proving what is essentially a negative can work just as well.

Connie, I know this is a stupid question, but is the patriot ancestor you're trying to join with on your father's side?  I am wondering if you need to go through all of this if your ancestor is on your mother's side, and she's willing to write a letter for you.

Also, can your mother petition the state to release your adoption records, since she's the only surviving parent?

Connie, is there any way you can get the hospital records. They probably have them in an archive somewhere and will probably give you grief, but give it a try.

What about any letter your mother may have from your father, with an early date on it.

If you do not have primary evidence  you sometimes have to put together a reasonable hypothesis, as Elizabeth Shown Mills said in the last seminar I took of hers.
