thank you Julia for your reply

In my state they did not list the name of the father on the birthcertificate but I am sure somewhere in the records his name is listed due to his paying half the Dr and Hospital bill, as well as the family info but no names.  I have met with my dad's cousins and we compaired the info I was given and it matches exactly so there is no doubt in their minds.  I am sure my birthmom would be willing to do a letter so I can always include it with the info I get from the State.   thank you for you help

There are no birth Ccertificates for 1880. You can use an online source for TN birth records, but if you find the reference it would be better to trace it to the source and get a copy of that record.  You can use the death certificate for a person born in 1880, or a census record. Try the cournt clerk's office in the county where your person was born.

Also get the will or probate for his/her father and this will confirm his birth if you are lucky enough to have him mentioned in his father's probate.

Has anyone used an online source for Tennessee Birth certificates.  Looking for my grandfather's BC born in 1880.

Did I clarify that for you. Sometimes it is clear as mud.

Donna, I will try and answer your question, but if it is not clear or you do not understand, just ask what you don't understand.

If your Patriot is accepted already by DAR and you are related to one of the members on this Patriot, you just have to connect yourself to this member at whatever generation you connect.

If you are not related you have to connect yourself as close as possible to the Patriot sometimes eight generations. The Patriot has children that members come thru and you find the direct child/person that is your ancestor and connect yourself to that child/person.

Yes you have use primary documents, birth, death, marriage, and divorce if applicable for a name change, for each generation until you connect to the child of the Patriot.

If you have a child/person you have proven that has not been accepted, and you can prove he/she is the child of the Patriot you can use that line and just submit the proof to document the connection.  Sometimes not every child of a Patriot has not been submitted by a member, that does not mean it still cannot be proven as a new line.

Please go to the website and browse around and see if you can get answers to your questions.

Also in your area, the website should have names of chapters and officers on the site and you can contact them. There is a form on their to apply for membership and DAR will send your info to the closest DAR chapter to you, and they will contact you.

The Registrars are there to help you get your application finished.

Julie,

In proving the direct line, do we need to have documents for each person in that line or just our parent who has the direct line to a DAR listed Patriot?

Connie, I am not sure about that. Did your father leave a will or probate with you mentioned as heir?

Can your mother do a certified statement to that effect stating he is the father.

Do your adoption papers have his name listed anywhere.

Point is, you have to prove the direct blood line by an official document, ie government, adoption agency, will, probate, or your mother's statement certified.

I am not sure even that statement will be enough to qualify you, but give it a try.
