Hello! I'm looking for information on Pointe Coupee, East and West Feliciana Parish general history. I'm also looking specifically for information on the Ellis-Farar Families of Louisiana and Mississippi. I have discovered that the last known owner of my great-great-great grandparents were Dr. William Newton Mercer who married into the Farar family. They were Charles (Charlie) and Charity Rounds.
I'm also looking into the history of Port Hudson, LA and the Corps de Afrique which later became known as the United States Colored Troops (USCT). My great-great grandfather Benjamin Thompson served in the 82nd USCT Infantry. Any history or information would be very helpful in digging up my Louisiana roots. Thanks!
Most of my Mississippi families go back and forth across the Louisiana border all through the 1800's and into the mid 1900's. Those families being Smith, Sutton, Rembert and Cutrer among others. They were involved in logging along the Illinois Central railroad line.
If you have a discussion topic with a parish or county location in Louisiana, you could put the parish or county in the subject line in the DISCUSSION FORUM above and it will make it easier to find for those researching in your area of interest. If there is not a heading for your parish or county, add "start discussion" with the button at left bottom.

I've just come across one of the most helpful websites I've ever visited: it's called the Red River Sankofa project--it describes itself as follows:
The Red River Sankofa Project is committed to connecting and honoring our ancestral ties to NW Louisiana and NE Texas by focusing on burial ground preservation. This rather remote, but bountiful area along the upper Red River of Louisiana and along the Texas Louisiana border has long been forgotten in historical text therefore we are dedicated towards sharing the rich stories and contributions of our African American ancestors who settled the area.
Regardless of your background, if you have roots in NW Louisiana, you'll find something useful here,
